Arthall is wonderful art gallery near St. George's Basilica in Victoria ir-Rabat. We introduced ourselves to owner/director Marta Obiols Fornell who, with her partner, the formidable and witty artist Tomas Hed, has been incredibly supportive of our work, providing us full access to explore the subterranean secret spaces of Arthall - the ghost room and the shaft - as a part of our Gozo: Sense of Place project. Poet Francesco Grech has joined us in our dialogic devising process. They hosted an event 10 February where we shared works created during the residency and discussed our work.
Ghost Room
The cling of cobwebs Provoke annoyance, Not anxiety. Crossing the threshold, Indulge the echo Against chiseled arches. - Paul Zmolek |

Smooth rock. Chiseled rock.
Wind. Rain. Sun. Made into blocks. Pockmarked from years of weathered fortitude. Like the faces of farmers we pass on our walks. Smell the stone, the earth, the dirt. The wet, the dank and the putrid. Decay. Rebirth. Decay. Echoes of ghosts have shaped this stone. Steady. Pace. Pace yourself. Go slow. - Joséphine A. Garibaldi |
Il-vireg diġà f'laħmi ... laħamna miżbugħa b'żebgħa bajda verġni.
Il-ġebla tirbombja l-eku tal-pass, tar-ritmu ... mejjet? Ir-riħa t'ansjetà tirbombja ġo fija, iddardarni. Itilqu minn hawn għax hawn l-ossiġnu spiċċa. |
"I can feel the bars inside my ... our flesh ... white washed. Virgin-like.
The stone echoes the steps, the (dead?) rhythm The smell of anxiety echoes inside me making me sick. Leave this place. You can't breathe here. - Francesco Grech |

Undercroft
Bars mounted overhead confound status.
Crack the code and Release? Perhaps. Crack. Cracks. C-R-A-A-A-C-K-K-S-S-S. Concealed by concrete. |
Sit in the shaft. Look up. Not too long. Vertigo. Suffocation. Can't breathe. |
Contemplate the worm carcasses on the floor eating along
the grid of mortar and stone. Rest. Bars mounted over head. - Joséphine A. Garibaldi |

Il-qabar deher jinfetaħ quddiemi. Aħrax il-ġisem ta' ġo fih. Imkemmex. Qrara nieqsa aħjar minn waħda żejda nkella x-xquq għandhom mnejn jinfetħu. Il-periklu ħa jintradam fuqi ... fuqna daqt. The tomb devoured me and I came face to face with a rough - wrinkled carcass. Better not to confess otherwise the cracks might crumble. The danger will bury me ... us soon. - Francesco Grech |
Simulated suffocation. Bureaucratic burial beneath Reams of redtape file. Just another worm hooked, Fishing for forced confession. Brush off with whitewash,
Keep the damage contained. - Paul Zmolek

Slow Walk/Small Rock
Gozo is 9 mi (14.5 km) long and 4.5 mi (7.25 km) wide and has an area of 26 sq mi (67 sq km). One could easily walk anywhere yet walking is not a prevalent mode of transportation, eschewed in favor of travel by personal vehicle or public bus. In our attempt to achieve some sort of "sense of place" we choose to walk, embracing the tradition of the flâneur to move slowly through space, to be in contact with the ground and to take the time to observe and be in place.
