Jardim da Igreja Matriz
Messejana, Portugal
During our July 2018 residency at Buinho Creative Hub we utilized the high-tech equipment of the FabLab to create low-tech, candlelit lanterns reflective of the local area. We photographed hundreds of images during our morning and evening walks in and around Messejana. Twenty-eight images from Messejana and one from Évora were laser cut in cardboard, parchment paper and cotton muslin. These images came from various locations: motifs from the altar, tiled walls and the dress of the statue of Nossa Senhora from Igreja Misericordia, tiles and keyholes of house entryways, frescos and bas relief ornamentation from the Franciscan monastery, tiles embedded in the park benches of Jardim de Igreja Matriz, street cobblestones and manhole covers, lace curtains, ruins of ancient rock walls and stacked roof tiles waiting to be installed. Flowers from the garden of Morgadinho and flora along the walk to the convent were gathered, dried and pressed for eleven more lanterns. |
