This was a completely solo endeavor for me. I performed, shot, and edited the piece on my own. This was an intentional process, the need for which came from the very intimate and vulnerable response that I had to several of the runes drawn for my score. As such, it felt appropriate to work within myself and my available skills for this process. The piece was shot in my side yard on a crisp, bright, fall afternoon in Lakewood, Washington. I recorded two takes of each action, making sure that each take was at least one minute long so that there would be ample footage from which to edit. Runescore 13 is bookended by close up shots of my face, beginning with the eye and ending with the mouth. The breathing filmed during the final rune is also used as the sound score for the moments of in-action in
the piece.
Along with each rune, there were several associated words from which we could choose to draw inspiration. Below is a chronological listing of the runes in my Runescore, each followed by the word(s) I chose to inform the action for the rune. Format is “Rune - action word(s)”
the piece.
