This was a completely solo endeavor for me. I performed, shot, and edited the piece on my own. This was an intentional process, the need for which came from the very intimate and vulnerable response that I had to several of the runes drawn for my score. As such, it felt appropriate to work within myself and my available skills for this process. The piece was shot in my side yard on a crisp, bright, fall afternoon in Lakewood, Washington. I recorded two takes of each action, making sure that each take was at least one minute long so that there would be ample footage from which to edit. Runescore 13 is bookended by close up shots of my face, beginning with the eye and ending with the mouth. The breathing filmed during the final rune is also used as the sound score for the moments of in-action in
the piece.

Along with each rune, there were several associated words from which we could choose to draw inspiration. Below is a chronological listing of the runes in my Runescore, each followed by the word(s) I chose to inform the action for the rune. Format is “Rune - action word(s)”

Picture
Initiation (inverted) - rob, deep
Protection (inverted) - escape
Movement - turn, illuminate
The Unknowable - hidden, avoided, shift
Fertility - calm, search
Growth - corners
Flow (inverted) - receptive, striving, leaving
Separation - remember, damage
Wholeness - sun, recharging
The Self - water, yielding, abides
Breakthrough - 180°, point
Harvest - cycle, shoots
Disruption - liberation, tree
Gateway - shines, confronted
Protection (inverted) - health

Set Up This photo shows tools used in the making of the Runescore 13 dance film. These materials include a tripod with phone mount, an adjustable heavy duty ladder, a table from my backyard filled with assorted items for the shoot. Not pictured is the iPhone on which the footage was shot, as that is the device used to capture this image.

Props and Pointy Things Garden table become prop table, holding choreography notebook, two shades of lipstick for layering, a water bottle filled with moderately warm water for the shot in which water is poured on my head, an insulated thermos with tea for the tea drinking shot, a teacup for that same shot, and a handkerchief because my nose always runs when I am dancing. Farthest to the left on the table is the spiked Locust tree twig that I stepped on while setting up the shot for the third rune action.
