We have been creative and life partners for over three decades. We are, as Kurt Vonnegut put it, "a nation of two". As such this rune was very appealing to us.
When we first began thinking about how to approach this we each had the same idea: "hands". Back to our separate spaces we each wrote our responses to the 15 action runes to create choreography for our hands. After sharing our initial responses, we realized that the 'hand ballet' seemed, although appropriate, contrived so we opted for more utilitarian tasks we typically share, framing each shot to capture the exchange of our labor through our hands. This seemed more in harmony with the comfort of our partnership. Embedded within these activities is the nuanced communication we implicitly understand between each other, a communication that accumulates after a lifetime of living and working together; the gift of a shared lifelong journey. For the stillness sections of the score, rather than a solid color, blank screen, we chose to shoot our hands within the Copper Daisies that have spilled over different locations on the front yard, blooming brilliantly this year with a lovely spray of color. During editing we decided to keep the audio portion of the Copper Daisies shot - including Jo's response to a leg cramp before getting in place and Paul not really being clear as to how we were going to use this footage that we rushed into the garden to shoot while the lighting was just right - as it reveals unscripted aspects of our ongoing partnership. |
Our working relationship has many dimensions. We often work in the mode of tag team (like the writing of this process statement). For our sound choice we each independently arrived at the same conclusion: we must include the song we used for our first dance at our wedding. Rather than utilize the original recording of the song we each recorded our own versions without listening to each others' and then put them together.
These sound tracks echo our tendency to be on parallel tracks in the same agreed upon direction yet in our own way, our own rhythm, as we see fit, true to our individual natures. Our practice together provides complexity, richness and frustration in our created efforts - and is often a source of amusement for our longtime collaborators.
