virtually At this moment In real time (1999) chr. Paul Zmolek, costumes Jeff Dintaman
A suite of non-sequiters to the music of Raymond Scott, most known by Carl Stahling's use of them for his brilliant Warner Bros cartoon scores. In a creative process I imagine to be somewhat akin to Charles Weidman's kinetic pantomime, I followed any and all tangential ideas when ever and where ever they took me. Some of the references include Martha Graham, ballet, Paul Taylor's 3 Epitaphs, the walking transitions from a suite by a famous Modern Dancer's work (the choreographer is still alive so will remain anonymous), pinball, transcendental meditation, Hollywood "Indians", cheerleading, and student parodies on choreography by a former professor and a graduated student. The backstage cross-over section was inspired by a colleague's insistence that she hated cross-overs because "they are stupid". The final lawnmower was in tribute to the constant sound of lawnmowers in the tiny town of Decorah, Iowa. The costumes were designed by Jeff Dintaman, a technical/design "McGyver" who rarely said no and almost always found an incredible creative solution to enhance the production. He is a rare talent and it was a joy to be able to work with him. PZ

“There
was a solo on the floor – elastic, absolutely wonderful, unusual, fully
given to momentum and to the moment, very present. I liked the abstract
complexity of the work." - Sondra Fraleigh
“I thought that it was challenging, intriguing vocabulary and very rich... a wonderful creative voice in this piece.” - James Sutton
