7 Nauthiz/Constraint, Necessity, Pain

"The role of Nauthiz is to identify our 'shadow' areas..." - Ralph Blum, The Book of Runes

Picture

After reading Blum's text on Nauthiz, the image of shadow lingered in my imagination: a constantly shifting shape in gradients of light to dark and the soft reveal or slow decay of clarity into opacity. I recalled a Hi8 video we shot of shadows of palms through a bathroom window when we lived in a small house in Palm Desert, CA many years ago. Unpacking stored boxes of archived Beta, VHS, Hi8, DVC, and DVDs, I eventually found what I was looking for. The original I could not find, however; fortunately, a tape of a previously edited version was only slightly degraded.

What is the sound of shadow?  A quick internet search led me to open source sound files recorded by NASA's Saturn Cassini spacecraft which had orbited Saturn for twenty years, documenting its rings and moons through photography, video and audio recordings.  To create the soundscape of Nauthiz, I layered excerpts of the Cassini sound files with spoken 'significant words' (excerpted from Blum's interpretation of each of the runes) of my 15 runes.

All content for Nauthiz - image, text, and sound - are structured according to the time brackets assigned to each rune.
