Joséphine was awarded a 2018-2019 fellowship at Florida State University’s Department of Art FabLab Facility for Arts Research (FAR) in northwest Tallahassee to further explore work initiated at the FabLab of Buinho Creative Hub in Messejana, Portugal during our July 2018 residency. We collected, dried and pressed local flora throughout the year which we utilized to make lanterns. At FAR we used the laser cutter to fabricate over 130 hardboard lantern "blanks" to illuminate the dried flora and photos of bird feathers. Additional cylindrical and globe lanterns as well as panels with large elephant ear leafs were fabricated. These 208 luminaries were utilized in the performance installation, Illuminating Site: Birdsong Window Gardens on May 4, 2019 and Illuminating Site: Star Pasture on December 14, 2019 at Birdsong Nature Center.

The intent of Illuminating Site is to fabricate 40 (+ or -) lanterns of various sizes to be installed in sites across
Tallahassee between the months of March and April 2019. For only one evening each, participants will
be able stroll and view lanterns at their leisure between a two hour block of time in the evening just
after dusk. Throughout Tallahassee there are several small, under-utilized neighborhood parks that
would create ideal settings for the performance installations. For example, within my neighborhood of
Killearn Estates there are ten neighborhood parks. As was true with the Messejana installation,
Illuminating Site will serve to illuminate the park sites, bringing neighbors to their nearby green spaces
where fear of safety after dusk will be relatively minimal.
