Nameless, but in sight

A performance installation reflective and reflexive of Culture Centre Vanha Paukku on the site of the former State Cartridge Factory in Lapua, Finland. The installation and performances were in the three spaces of the top floor of the Creative Community Center building; the atelier, kitchen and cold storage. Collaborating artists: Maarit Halonen, Konsta Ikola, Samuli Koskela, and Egon Overteyns.

Individual artist spaces, hallway and shared spaces are indicated by lines painted on the floor. The installation created "walls" that marked the three spaces allotted to us. The first, Lapua River Walk included pressed flowers picked by the river behind the Centre. The second, Rooted, but estranged, featured text written by our collaborators, twigs and leaves collected locally, and plastic with remnants of flour and water paste utilized throughout the installation. The third, Raw rage unveils intimacy, mostly displayed the texts written by our collaborators. Egon Overteyns performed in all three spaces while Samuli Koskela performed in the shared sink space adjacent to the installation.

Kitchen

The Kitchen is a small space between the Atelier and Cold Storage that was being prepared for painting. Its austere beauty only required removal of tools and paint buckets with the addition of one of Maarit Halonen's text, an old hand written log of books acquired for the local library that we found in the Atelier and a sprig of willow.
The audience crowded around the door to view the performances by Maarit and Samuli.

The Cold Storage overlooks the Lapua River. Unfortunately (or fortunately for us) fire code regulations do not allow for habitation, thus we could install in the most beautiful space in the building. Nameless Weaving #1 utilized newsprint and other paper as 'yarn' woven on a 'loom' of birch and willow branches. Float, inspired by the memorial photos of the forty victims of the tragic 1976 Lapua Ammunition Cartridge Factory explosion, suspends forty papier-mache heads on a raft of birch and willow branches. The other exhibits within the installation were constructed of objects found within the space.
