Shaking the Yoke
Shaking the Yoke is a series of choreographed vignettes for four performers that explore the restrictions of body limitations albeit age, physical disabilities and “woman “ as defined by narrow constructions of beauty. Originally, Yoke was choreographed for a 5’x5’ stage that rose 2.5’ above ground. I was so intrigued by the limitations of the small space, I included a 2’x2’x2’ actors box as the central metaphor “on a pedestal.” The stories that unfolded included monologues about hair, Adam’s first wife, Barbie, and bound feet. Through the development and manipulation of original text, movement source material was created by the performers then manipulated by myself as director. - JG |
